I had a great break in Melbourne for a few days. I stayed in St Kilda and played tourist. I went to a one-day match cricket match. I thought Australia would lose, but Glen Maxwell hit 94 runs, and Australia beat the Indians. I had my birthday and got a couple of books I wanted. But that same day, a letter was being signed, informing me that the writer’s program at Divine was being scrapped. I rang the editor; she confirmed that the website is changing to more of an information site, so few, if any, articles will be published on it. I was nearly in tears.

After 52 articles over five and a half years, I am no longer paid to write for Divine. Although I had a few ups and downs while writing for the site, overall it was a great site to write for. I got to write on many different subjects and in many different styles. I interviewed writers and actors with disabilities and a professor who had programmed robots to aid people with disabilities. I reviewed films about people with disabilities. I wrote about personal experiences, such as what it is like to look for work with a disability. Through my research for articles, I discovered Australia has one of the worst attitudes in the world to people with disabilities. We refuse to employ them or show them on our television screens and seem to be satisfied with condemning many of them to live in poverty.

I was so involved in writing for Divine. I was always reading about disabilities in the media. But now it is gone. I can only hope I get another opportunity to write such wide-ranging articles for an organisation that cares about more than clickbait.

So I was on a real downer after I read that letter. But even on that day, I started planning for my next stage of life. I had been thinking about doing a website design course for a few years and using my writing skills to create awesome websites. I did some research and found there is a high demand for website designers in Australia – I had thought the opposite. I then found an online course full of website design subjects through a government-approved provider, Open Universities. I found out I could get not only fee help but a commonwealth-supported spot in that course (if I enrolled on time). I rang Open Universities to ask some questions and ended up enrolling. If it turns out to be a captain’s pick, I can still withdraw before the census date at no cost. Now, I am going through the process of claiming Austudy.

With all that going on, I have done little writing. I am still in chapter ten of the redrafting of my novel Branded. I added about 2500 words to it in January. I did not critique anything in January. Twice I printed out stories from critters.org and read them once, but I did not get around to reading them a second time and scribbling all over them. And I read very little fiction in January, maybe 50 pages on the train to Melbourne. I am still too tired at night to read.

If my Austudy claim is successful and I start the course, I will need to devote about 30 hours a week to study (the study guide says 20-24hrs). So, it is going to take some determination to ensure that I make substantial progress in my redrafting of Branded. Hopefully I can.

Oh, and I did get one last article up on Divine in January. It’s a review of Accessible Melbourne, a free Lonely Planet travel guide for people with disabilities.

I won’t miss it. It was a year when tiredness had me questioning, more than usual, my writing abilities. I had a bit of a writing breakdown in April when I realised my writing was going nowhere slowly. I simply wasn’t writing enough. I still don’t, but my word count did go up after April, at least until I finished writing the first draft of a novel in October. After that, it was onto redrafting, editing and proofreading.

I wrote about 113,000 words for the year, an average of 300 or so words per day. At the beginning of the year, my goal was to average 500 words a day, and if I had just been writing first drafts and redrafting, I might have come close. I wrote on all but nine days of the year.

I wrote a 6,000-word short story for a Christmas anthology for the Australian Writer’s Forum. If you want to read it, there are links to the free ebook in a previous post.

But my major writing effort was finishing the first draft of a novel called Branded. I originally wrote its first two chapters for a writing for young adults subject in my masters and then put it away for eight years. I pulled it back out for 2014’s National Novel Writing Month, and about 130,000 words later, I finished the first draft in October. I am currently about a quarter of the way through redrafting it, and so far, I have added an extra chapter.

Critiquing.

One of the issues that really concerned me in April was the need for more critiquing of my writing. I did get two and a bit critiques of my short story. No one said they loved it, but that has rarely happened in all the years I have been writing. So either my writing sucks, or my story plots and themes are crap, or my writing fails to connect with the average reader/critiquer. The story I wrote could have a better ending, which I will add if I ever think of one.

I do hang on to the positive responses to a few bits of my writing from lecturers in writing courses. I received one such positive response for the first two chapters of the novel I am working on.

In an effort to find more writers on my wavelength, I joined The Australian Writer’s Forum and rejoined Critters.org, and started critiquing for both. From May, I critiqued 20 stories and a 66,000 word novel for critters.org, and three stories for the anthology for the Australian Writer’s Forum.

Reading.

Did I mention I was tired? I started the year tired, and then, in about August, another dose of one of my various chronic illnesses made me even more tired. From August to the end of this year, I read three-quarters of a novel. Before that, I had read about seven books for the year.

Divine.

In April, grumpy me had a hissy fit when my editor at Divine dared to do her job, and asked for changes to an article so it would conform to government guidelines (Divine is funded by the Office For Disability and hence the Victorian State Government). Fortunately, I pulled my head in and edited the article. After a two-month break, I wrote another four articles for Divine and I and currently working on the first for the new year.

My Writing Goals for 2016.

I need to get more sleep. If I can get on top of my chronic tiredness, the quantity and quality of my writing should improve, as well as my general demeanour. I have been a grumpy bastard all year. And I also am going to spend less time on Facebook and more time writing or learning about writing.

That is not the case. My word output dropped because I was proofreading/editing and redrafting. I continued redrafting a novel and spent a week trying to finalise a long short story due for submission for a Christmas anthology at the end of November.

I ended up writing about 5820 new words of fiction for the month.

Critiquing.

I received three critiques of my story for the Christmas anthology during the month. One was a very useful full edit, another was just a comment agreeing with the suggested edits of a previous critique, and the other… Well, first, some background.

I did a copy edit/critique of one of the other stories written for our Christmas anthology. It was a non-fiction story about a Christmas spent in an indigenous community. I really enjoyed the story. I found it informative and was interested in reading about life in an Indigenous community written by someone who had lived in one. I made a fair few edits to the story, many for what I thought were repeated grammar errors.

The writer was unhappy with my critique or the other one he had received. He said that as his writing was not good enough, he would withdraw his story from the anthology and quit our writing group. I wrote back to him that it was a shame he was withdrawing his story, as I thought it would be a worthy addition to the anthology.

He also said this about my story:

“I printed it out and commenced reading but was unable to finish it…….without saying anything I gave it to my wife to read. She couldn’t finish reading it either and her ‘critique, was summed up in two words, …….”It’s weird.””

As you can see from his comment, one of his various writing problems is the overuse of ellipses.

But I did not take his comments to heart as they appeared to be written out of spite. I also don’t think my story is that great, and I am still changing it.

At the end of November, I asked Chris, whose book I helped edit, to look at my story. He agreed to do so. But I then realised that I should hurry up and finish it (is a story ever finished?) because it was due for submission at the end of November. Chris did have a look at the first 2,000 words or so, though.

In contrast to the upset I caused the writer of the Christmas story, another writer was very happy with my critique of his 66,000-word novel. It took me just on three months to critique and it was the first volume of what could be a very entertaining and interesting science fiction trilogy. I offered to critique the sequel. I also critiqued another story for the anthology, and again, the writer appreciated my comments.

Reading

Again, I did very little reading for the month.

A New Article on Divine

An article I wrote on an audio description trial on the ABC’s iview service went up on Divine a few days ago.
Once more, it has been a while since my last post. I have been extremely busy writing and doing other writing activities, as you will see in my update for October. But this post is about September.

In September, my Ulcerative Colitis decided to remind me of its existence, so I had to take some medicine, which made me extremely tired for just over half the month.

At the beginning of September, I was writing a short story for a Christmas anthology that a few members of the Australian Writers Forum were creating. I finished the story’s first draft on the same day I started taking the medication. At that stage, the story was 9,800 words, 3,800 words over the suggested word limit.

I redrafted the story over the next few days, reducing it to 7,400 words. I then printed it, proofread and edited it many times over the next few weeks. I found a lot to change each time and eventually reduced the story to 7,200 words. On the last day of the month, I finally submitted it to the group for critiquing. I then returned to the novel I had been writing.

One reason I made so many changes when proofreading was that the story was in the third person. I had not written in the third person for a long time, and my tiredness probably had something to do with it, too.

I estimate that I wrote 8,746 new words for the month, much lower than for the previous months (as shown in the graph), but I expected my word count to drop when editing. I averaged 291 words per day. Only on nine days did I reach my quota of 500 words. I proofread/edited for at least two hours on about six days.

Critiquing

Due to tiredness, I only managed to critique about ten thousand words of the novel I am critiquing. Sorry, Peter. Ideally, I wanted to critique about twice as many words.

Reading

I read bugger all due to tiredness. I’m still reading Dust, the third book in Hugh Howey’s Wool series.

Non-fiction writing

I had another article up on Divine in September. It is about smart homes for people with disabilities. Divine has been having computer problems, which has meant my story hung around on its front page for nearly all of September. I also had the second and fourth articles listed on the site for that period. But I did not write any articles in September due to…

I have finally made time to write my monthly blog post about my fiction writing efforts for the previous month. I have been extremely busy writing, editing, critiquing and being sick. Yep, my ulcerative colitis has come back at the wrong time, but when is a good time for it?

Fiction Writing.

I continued writing my novel, adding another 8549 words. I am very close to the end of the first draft, so it was with great reluctance that I stopped to write a short story I had committed to finish by the end of August.

I started the short story on the 17th of August, hoping to finish it before attending the Melbourne Writers Festival at the end of the month. At the end of August, I had written 5,582 words, and it was still nowhere near finished. The story is for a Christmas anthology created by members of the Australian Writer’s Forum.

So, all up, I wrote 14,031 words for the month, which is not quite the average of 500 words a day that I am aiming for. I met my quota of 500 words a day on only 23 days. I have now written about 129,000 words of the novel.

Critiquing.

I critiqued another story for critters.org and then committed to critiquing a whole novel on Critters. Fortunately, the writer writes much shorter manuscripts than I do, with it being 66,000 words. By the end of the month, I had critiqued the first six chapters, about 10,000 words.

Reading.

I finished reading the very good classic; I am Legend, by Richard Matheson. It is one of the original apocalyptic novels. In it, a virus decimates the population, leaving one lone survivor to battle vampire-like creatures. It was made into at least two films, one recent one starring Will Smith and the much better The Omega Man. The novel is very different from both films. Although written 60 years ago, the story still packs a punch. I then started reading Dust, the third book in Hugh Howey’s apocalyptic Wool series.

Melbourne Writers Festival.

I went to the festival for the third year in a row. The only science fiction author I saw on a panel kept apologising for his book being science fiction, so I did not buy it. I learnt a bit from a panel with the editors of Peter Carey and Jonathan Franzen (I’ve read several of both author’s books.) The best author talk I went to was by mistake. The festival organisers changed the venue without telling me, but my ticket still got me in to see Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket). He was there promoting a novel for adults called We Are Pirates, and with a title like that, I just had to buy it. Overall, the festival was not as good as the two previous years. I hope to write more about it in upcoming posts.

Divine Writing.

I had one non-fiction article published on Divine this month, about a casting call for an Australian web-series Aliens Vs Crips, where four people with disabilities try to survive an alien invasion.

I am starting to feel a bit more like a writer who is actually doing more than dreaming about becoming a novelist. July has been my best writing month this year, as shown in the graph. I wrote 17,127 words of my novel in the month, an average of 552 words per day. And I reached my target of 500 words or more on all but two days of the month. Unfortunately, that means that once I met the quota, I did not usually write much more. The most words I wrote in a day was 821.

I have now written about 120,000 words of the novel. I had hoped to have the first draft finished this month, but my characters continue to resist making the inevitable decision to abandon their search and get to the climax. They’re not as bad as climate change deniers, though. At the moment, they are having an argument, and the pro-keep-on-searching characters are making a lot of sense—too much sense for them to just quit looking.

My characters obviously don’t care that I have committed to writing a short story for a Christmas collection, the first draft of which needs to be done by the end of August. So it looks like after this week, I might have to stop the novel writing for a couple of weeks and get onto the short story. This bothers me as I am so close to the end of the novel; I just want to get its first draft finished. But at least I have a good idea for the story.

Critiquing.

Once again, this month, I critiqued four stories for critters.org. The stories I critiqued were mostly by beginning writers, so my critiques were longish; two were over 1200 words. I finally finished a critique of a story for the Australian Writers Forum that was delayed by technology problems in June.

Reading.

I read a bit more this month. I finished reading Amnesia by Peter Carey. It’s not his best novel, but it was still a good read with a great central character. He was a journalist/writer secreted away from the law as he wrote a biography of a woman who created a computer virus that released thousands of asylum seekers from their prisons. The premise suggests a thriller, but the book is more about discovering how her life motivated her to release the virus. I hope to get around to writing a review of it for this blog later this month.

I am currently reading a science fiction classic in Richard Matheson’s I am Legend. A book that was turned into the classic science-fiction movie The Omega Man and the not so good recent movie with the same title as the book.

Non-Fiction.

Yeah, I know these updates should be only about my fiction writing endeavours, but I have to plug my Divine articles whenever I get the chance. I have a new article up on Divine that is all about a fascinating exhibition on the human mind I had a look at why I was down in Melbourne a few months ago. I really recommend the permanent exhibition and my article about it.

I had a writing meltdown in April. I was, and still am, frustrated with the lack of output and progress with my fiction writing. Strangely, the meltdown was caused by my non-fiction writing after I submitted an article to Divine in mid-April. The editor immediately replied, wanting a few changes. Most of the changes were due to restrictions imposed on Divine because it is run by the state government. These restrictions would not allow me to mention the name of the website the article was all about.

I had hoped that I would be on safe ground mentioning this website because its creator – who I interviewed – had what I considered a great deal of credibility due to her advocacy in the disability field. The website has also been written about in mainstream newspapers.

My initial reaction to the editor’s request for changes was that the article would not work without mentioning the website, so I should just scrap the idea. But then, what would I write? I had no idea. Coming up with ideas for Divine is becoming harder, and researching and writing them seems to be less enjoyable and fulfilling.

The last article I enjoyed writing for Divine was a review of the movie The Theory of Everything. The unsentimental and unsensational movie, combined with some knowledge of Hawking, made it easy to write. But since then, I have had various issues when researching and writing articles. I thought that with the problems my recent submissions were encountering, maybe I should just take a break. So, I shot off an email to my editor saying I was going to scrap the article and take a break.

When I finally looked at the article again, I found it relatively easy to remove the website name and make the necessary changes to still have a reasonable article. So, I sent another email to my editor saying that I could make the changes if she still wanted the article. I had real doubts about whether the editor actually wanted the article. I also had real doubts that it or anything else I had written for Divine was any good. I feared my enthusiasm for Divine had more to do with my articles being published than my writing.

I then began questioning whether anything I had ever written was more than misguided enthusiasm and whether my Master of Creative Writing was more of a Master of Creative Delusion. On top of that, I thought my writing had improved little over the years and might even have gone backwards due to my constant tiredness.

Anyway, I decided to take a real break from writing and get away for a few days. I went to Melbourne for four nights. I went to the footy, Scienceworks (including the planetarium), the zoo, and the museum. I almost expelled writing from my mind for four days, except when I came across two ideas for articles for Divine.

But then came the day I was due to return home, and I checked my emails. My editor wanted to speak to me. She wanted to “renegotiate” how I wrote for Divine. This sounded ominous to me, like she was going to take the opportunity to get rid of a crap writer. Unfortunately/fortunately, she was not in the office that day, so I could not contact her to have my fears confirmed. Instead, I had all day, including a three-and-a-half-hour train trip, to ponder what renegotiate meant. As it turned out, I did a lot more than ponder Divine; I spent a lot of the train trip thinking about my writing goals and why I was still standing alone at full-back, a long way from my goals.

I concluded that I was more in love with the idea of being a writer and trying to appear like one, rather than actually being one. I have written 46 articles of varying quality for Divine. I have written a post for this blog nearly every week for the past seven years, and I have done a number of writing courses. I have completed Nanowrimo three times, and I have connected to 100’s of writers through social media and some of the published ones actually commented on my posts. I even write every day, but precious little quality fiction.

I am still yet to have any fiction published. I have three novel scripts, a novella, and numerous short stories all filed away in first or second draft stage. Although I write every day, I don’t write much, and on many days, writing is the last thing I get around to doing. I don’t read much, either. The way I am going, when I die, the sum total of my fiction writing will be a dozen first/second draft novel manuscripts on a USB stick, which no one else will ever read.

Something had to change. On the train trip home, I felt I had two choices: either get stuck into fiction writing or quit. By getting stuck in, I mean writing a lot more quality fiction and improving as I learned more about the writing process. To help improve my writing, I need to get it critiqued.

I need to make changes in my life to help me achieve my writing goals. The big one is to overcome my constant tiredness. I am sure one of my chronic illnesses has a lot to do with it, so it’s time to finally try everything to get it under control. To help with this, I decided to reduce some of the stress in my life, part of which I achieved by negotiating a two-month break from Divine. I have no doubt that my reaction to the Divine editor’s changes and my diminished enthusiasm for writing for Divine has been influenced by my tiredness.

I decided to get off social media. There are a number of reasons for doing this, including using that time to write. But primarily, I want to get rid of the delusional satisfaction that I am a real writer because I associate with actual writers, many of whom are published authors. In reality, I am just a wannabee writer. So, I quit Facebook a fortnight ago. The lack of contact with people I care about, and many who I am curious about, has been very hard, and I really miss playing Word with Anny during my afternoon coffee break.

I decided to get some quid pro quo going for critiquing. I re-joined critters.org, and I also joined the Australian Writers’ Forum. I need to find other science fiction writers for mutual critiquing. My search for trusted critiquers and beta readers begins.

I also have decided to spend less time blogging. Some of the posts on this blog have taken many hours to research and write, time I could have spent writing or learning about writing. From now on, most of my posts will be book reviews. I figure reviewing books will get me thinking about what works in writing.

So, what did I actually achieve writing wise during the month? As I didn’t write for 14 days in a row, I only added 3766 words to the novel. I read a book, Robert Swindells’ nuclear apocalypse young adult novel Brother in the Land, review pending.

PS. I seem to be writing more fiction since I quit Facebook. And I also find myself thinking more about the novel I am writing and not about some status update on Facebook. But computer problems have not helped. First, there was some malware, then a product recall on the power cord for my laptop, where they recommended only using it once a new cord arrived. Toshiba told me they would “process” my registration for a new cord within five working days. Does that include mailing the thing out? I was also having trouble with the laptop’s DVD burner, so I bought a new computer. Now, I have to get used to using Windows 8. In between fiddling with the new computer, transferring files, and trying to remember all those passwords, I did make the time to critique a story for critters. Yay, one whole critique this year.

In March, I added 5848 words to Branded, a science-fiction, young adult novel, so I improved on February’s 4841 words. I averaged 188 words per day in March compared to 173 words per day for February and 155 words per day in January.

The novel is now just under 70,000 words. It has five parts, and I am probably just over halfway into the fourth part. It looks like the novel will be about 100,000 words, at least the first draft.

I am still very much enjoying writing it. The dysfunctional group of characters are barely getting on at the moment, but one of the causes is about to be removed.

Non-Fiction Writing.

I wrote one article for Divine in March. It was about a lack of actors with disabilities playing characters with disabilities, especially in Australian movies and television. I contacted a few people in the industry for the article, and about half of them got back to me. I learned much about the issue from those who did, like Australian actress Kate Hood. She had the unique perspective of being an in-demand actress before she developed a disability, and she is involved in an Actor’s Equity disability committee.

A lot has been written about actors without disabilities “cripping up” to play characters with disabilities. My article attempts to provide some factual information from people and organisations directly involved in the industry, such as actors, casting agencies, and unions (note that the producers and directors did not get back to me).

The article, Actors with Disabilities, was published on Divine last Thursday.

I also started researching my next article on disability parking. It concerns people without disabilities who feel they are entitled to park in disability parking spots.

Blog Writing.

I have four posts for the month. I missed a week while researching a post on ebook piracy, which I found to be very common. Every author I checked had pirated versions of their ebooks available on the web.

Reading.

I read two books for the month and enjoyed them both. No Limit, by Australian/New Zealander Holly Childs. It is a hip novella full of hip people doing hip things while they worry about the world ending. And The Method, by Juli Zeh, which is a dystopian science-fiction thriller in the tradition of 1984 and Brave New World.

Critiquing.

I still have not critiqued anything this year.

So far this year, I have written on every day.

Health permitting, I hope to greatly improve on my novel writing efforts and critique something, anything, in April.

Novel Writing.

I am still writing Branded, a science fiction young adult novel. In February, I added 4841 words, 25 words more than in January, and in three fewer days. So, I averaged 173 words a day for the month, compared to 155 words a day in January.

The novel is now just under 65,000 words. It has five parts, and I am probably a quarter of the way into the fourth. It still looks like the novel will be somewhere between 90,000 and 100,000 words.

I am still very much enjoying writing it. The dysfunctional group of characters are barely getting on at the moment, but not for much longer.

Non-Fiction Writing.

I wrote two articles for Divine in February, both of which went up on the website during the month. Both were reviews of films whose central character has a disability. One was a review of Still Alice, a film where the main character has early on-set Alzheimer’s, and the other was a biography of scientist Stephen Hawking, The Theory of Everything.

My reviews concentrated on the films’ disability aspects, highlighting whether the characters with disabilities were realistically portrayed and what experience the movie’s writers had with disabilities.

My next article fits in with those reviews as I research why actors with that disability rarely portray characters with disabilities.

Blog Writing.

I just squeezed in the four blog posts last month, posting the last on the 28th of February.

Reading.

I actually finished reading a novel – yay for me – the very good Zoo City by Lauren Beukes. I reviewed it in my last blog post. It only took me four whole months to read – my excuse is tiredness as for about nine weeks of those four months I was sick or taking a medication that made me tired.

I am currently reading No Limits by Holly Childs, a hip novella full of hip people doing hip things. Like Beukes, I saw Childs at last year’s Melbourne Writers Festival. Hopefully, it won’t take me four months to read her book.

Critiquing.

Like in January, I did not make time to critique anyone else’s writing in February. Not good.

Also, like in January, I wrote every day of the month.

Health permitting, I hope to greatly improve my writing and reading efforts in March so that these monthly posts don’t continue to resemble a guilt sheet.

Novel Writing.

I am currently writing a young adult novel, Branded. I wrote the first chapter as part of a writing for young adults subject in a Master of Creative Writing I finished in 2007. I then filed the chapter away as I concentrated on other writing. I pulled it back out for last November’s National Novel Writing Month, adding just over 50,000 words in that month. In January, I added a further 4816 words, an average of 155 words a day.

The novel is now just under 60,000 words. It has five parts, and I have just started part four. It looks like it will be somewhere between 90,000 and 100,000 words.

I am still very much enjoying writing it, especially after I just managed to get most of the dysfunctional group of characters back to working together.

Non-Fiction Writing.

I had two articles up on Divine last month, twice as many as usual. One was on robots helping people with disabilities and the other gave some reasons for the low participation rate of the people with disabilities in the workforce.

I successfully pitched four ideas to the editor. Two of the articles will be film reviews. I am currently writing one of them. They will be slightly different from the typical film review because of their disability angle.

Blog Writing.

I wrote four blog posts last month; the last one took a lot of time to research and write as I analysed the novels on the Goodreads Choice Awards science fiction list.

Reading.

I am halfway through Lauren Beukes’s very enjoyable science fiction novel Zoo . It is a mystery novel set in a marvellously inventive near-future South Africa.

Critiquing.

I did not make time to critique anyone else’s writing in January. Not good.

But I did write every day of the month.

Health permitting, I hope to improve significantly on my writing and reading efforts in February so these monthly posts don’t start resembling a guilt sheet.
